United were eager to have the Dutchman in place before the end of the last campaign in order to ensure there was a smooth transition between regimes and so that no precious time was lost in a summer which could dictate the success of the next decade at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag will oversee training for the first time on June 27 when the first phase of players return to Carrington ready to impress the new man in charge. Amongst them will be those who weren’t involved on recent international duty and a cluster of squad players all fighting to get a chance as part of the new-look United side.

The new United manager won’t be blessed with a full squad of players to begin with, but it could actually work to his advantage ahead of a gruelling season in which his side will once again be involved in the Europa League.

Ten Hag will need to utilise his squad to its limits next season if he is to maintain a strong showing in the Premier League while also staying competitive in Europe, something which he could get a taste of this summer.

Hannibal Mejbri will be eager for more playing time next season as well and could benefit immensely from being given the chance to shine in Europe. Shola Shoretire and Alejandro Garnacho will both be hoping for involvement, though it still might be a bit too soon for either of them to be starting these matches.

Up front, Anthony Elanga could continue to play in his favoured left-wing role, and on the right, either Amad or Facundo Pellistri could be given the chance to establish themselves as a genuine option.

The central striking role could be occupied by a new attacking signing in the summer window, but if not, Marcus Rashford could play there, something which might allow him to rediscover his confidence and form.
