Manchester United reportedly remain confident that Barcelona will lower their asking price as their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong continues. United are in talks with their Catalan counterparts over potentially bringing De Jong to Old Trafford this summer.

Frenkie de Jong

Erik ten Hag is keen to be reunited with his former Ajax protégé, having identified him as an ideal target for United’s midfield. The two clubs though remain a fair way apart in their respective valuations of the player.

According to The Guardian though, United are confident Barcelona will eventually give in and lower their fee, but that the La Liga side have already rejected a bid for De Jong.

The offer would have reportedly seen Barcelona receive an upfront fee of around £51.3million, which could have then risen to £60.1m with add-ons.

Given the financial problems at the Nou Camp, The Guardian claim Barca will “almost certainly” have to sell De Jong this summer. The midfielder has so far been adamant in his desire to stay with the Catalan giants.

Elsewhere, Ajax are reportedly refusing to let go of Lisandro Martinez this summer, with the defender having been linked to United. Arsenal have also been touted as a possible destination, with the Gunners claimed to have had a bid rejected.

Martinez has been suggested as a potential option for United as they look to be targeting a new central defender. Jurrien Timber has been identified as the club’s defensive priority, although recent reports have suggested the Netherlands international is leaning towards staying in Amsterdam.

His regular centre-back partner could then become an option, although according to TyC Sports (via the Mirror), Ajax are taking a firm stance in not allowing Martinez to leave. The report suggests Arsenal have already had a £25.7m bid rejected for the Argentina international.

It’s claimed there is no release clause in Martinez’s contract, meaning either Arsenal or United would have to make an offer that Ajax would find too good to turn down. The Eredivise champions though don’t look as though they will move on their stance.
